back to: Area Information

The Borough of Tenafly was incorporated on January 24, 1894. However, early references to "Tiene Vly" (Dutch - Ten Swamps) and "Tenevlay" (Willow Meadow, also Little Valley) date back to 1688 when a large tract of land was granted to Colonel Jacobus Van Cortland. One of his three daughters, Mrs. Depeyster, inherited most of the area that is now Tenafly.

Tenafly has successfully evolved from a Dutch farming community into an elegant commuter suburb, which is a convenient drive or bus ride from New York City. It's primarily residential, with a compact retail area that includes a movie theater. there are good recreational facilities, including two privately run swim clubs and an impressive variety of activities offered for all ages. Tenafly features Davis Johnson Park and a nature center.

Tenafly is recognized as having a high quality school system. New Jersey Monthly's (September 2002) "Top 75 Public High Schools" ranks Tenafly High #11 in the state. The community maintains the tradition of neighborhood schools - there is an elementary school in each of the borough's quadrants.

Tenafly covers 4.6 square miles from the top pf the Palisades, west into the valley from which its name is derived. Tenafly's population is 14,214 (Census 2004).
